Those who say "Why didn't Obama disown his pastor" and "Why didn't Obama leave the church" are missing the boat. They are walking the path that so many have followed and missed their purpose. The path that allows so many Christians to stumble in their walks and blocks others from receiving Christ. By viewing going to church as worship of a man and looking at man as the example of perfect Christianity. What they fail to see is that going to church should be about your relationship with Christ and not solely your relationship with your Pastor.
And importantly, when you are seeking after that relationship with Christ and not being blindsided by the flaws in the congregation, that you come to learn about covenant. In a covenant you don't simply say there's a problem and remove yourself from it, you face up to the challenge within the covenant relationship with a solution that results in a stronger union. You don't simply abandon and disown.
In a society with drive-thru weddings and quickie divorces, the rarity of staying on a job for more than 5 years, and a majority of single parent households, its no wonder that America's first thought is to abandon ship. Obama's campaign and issue with Rev. Wright caused America to suddenly want to peek through the windows of the Black church. However, beyond race, politics and religious practices in pulpits of different ethnicities, let us not miss the greater lesson here of the focus and purpose of attending church, and of remaining in covenant even when the world says to walk away.
